Drone Exterior Cleaning on the North Carolina Coast

From the Outer Banks to the Brunswick Islands, North Carolina's beach towns are lined with oceanfront hotels and condominium buildings that take the full force of salt spray, sand, and wind. The drone reaches upper floors, balconies, and rooflines without a lift on the sand or scaffolding against the building for days.

Built for coastal buildings

Coastal buildings need a method matched to their materials and to the salt they collect: a low-pressure soft wash for stucco, EIFS, siding, and painted surfaces, chemistry matched to glass and metal railings, deionized water for solar panels, and a power wash for concrete. And a drone's small footprint means any closure of an entrance, parking lot, or beach access is brief, not the days a lift or scaffolding can take. Because wind is usually stronger at the oceanfront, oceanfront work depends on the weather, and some jobs may need to be rescheduled.

Our coastal service area

Our coastal service area runs the length of North Carolina's coastline. These are the stretches of coast we cover.

Outer Banks

Corolla to Nags Head

Corolla, Duck, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, and Nags Head, where the larger buildings are oceanfront hotels and condominiums exposed to wind and salt from both the ocean and the sound.

Crystal Coast

Morehead City to Emerald Isle

Morehead City, Atlantic Beach, Emerald Isle, and Beaufort, from oceanfront condominium buildings in Atlantic Beach to waterfront buildings along Bogue Sound.

Topsail Island

Surf City & North Topsail Beach

Surf City, Topsail Beach, and North Topsail Beach, with oceanfront condominium buildings facing the open Atlantic.

Cape Fear coast

Wrightsville, Carolina & Kure Beach

The beaches outside Wilmington, with oceanfront hotels and condominiums. See our Wilmington page for more on this area.

Brunswick Islands

Oak Island to Sunset Beach

Oak Island, Holden Beach, Ocean Isle Beach, Sunset Beach, and Southport, where oceanfront condominium and hotel buildings face the open Atlantic.

Why coastal buildings get dirty

Buildings on the coast deal with salt, sand, and wind on top of long, humid summers.

Salt air

Salt film and corrosion

Salt spray leaves a film on glass, metal railings, and painted surfaces. Salt pulls moisture out of the air, so coated surfaces stay damp longer, which speeds up corrosion, rust staining, and mildew. A low-pressure soft wash removes the salt film without the surface wear high pressure can cause.

Wind & storms

Wind-blown sand and storm residue

Onshore wind carries sand and salt onto facades, balconies, and ledges, and every nor'easter or tropical storm leaves another layer behind. Built up over time, it dulls glass and paint and holds moisture against the surface.

Summer

Humidity, algae, and mildew

Surfaces that stay damp through a humid coastal summer, like north-facing walls, shaded stucco and EIFS, and concrete that rarely sees sun, grow green algae and mildew.

Roofs

Black streaks on shingles

Black streaks on the shingle roofs of condominium, hotel, and apartment buildings are Gloeocapsa magma, an airborne cyanobacteria that feeds on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles and thrives in coastal humidity. A low-pressure soft wash kills it; pressure washing strips the shingle granules.

Wildlife

Bird droppings on ledges and railings

Gulls and other shorebirds roost on ledges, rooflines, and railings. Their droppings are acidic and can stain and etch surfaces if left in place.

Coastal questions

Can you clean oceanfront condominium and hotel buildings?

Yes, when the weather allows. Oceanfront buildings take the full force of salt spray, wind-blown sand, and humidity, and the drone reaches upper floors, balconies, and railings without a lift on the sand or scaffolding against the building. Wind is usually stronger at the oceanfront, so these jobs depend on the weather, and we may need to reschedule if conditions are not safe.

Can you remove salt buildup from oceanfront buildings?

Yes, in most cases. Salt spray leaves a film on glass, metal, and painted surfaces that pulls moisture from the air, which keeps surfaces damp and speeds up corrosion and mildew. A low-pressure soft wash removes the salt film and the growth it feeds, and solar panels get deionized water with no chemicals. If corrosion has already damaged a surface, we will tell you during the assessment.

Does coastal wind affect drone cleaning?

Yes. Wind is the biggest limit on drone work at the coast, and it is usually strongest right at the oceanfront, so oceanfront jobs are the most weather dependent. We will check the forecast before every job and fly only when conditions are safe for the drone and for the cleaning, and if the wind picks up, we will pause or reschedule rather than risk increased overspray or an unsafe flight.

Can you fly anywhere on the North Carolina coast?

Not without the right approvals. The coast has several airports with controlled airspace and several military installations, and flying on or over a Marine Corps installation such as Camp Lejeune, Marine Corps Air Station New River, or Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point requires prior approval from the installation. We will check the airspace for every job, secure any authorization needed before scheduling, and tell you up front if a location cannot be flown.

How tall a building can you clean on the coast?

Our drone reaches up to 150 feet. On taller buildings, we can clean the lower stories, podium levels, entry canopies, signage, and attached parking decks. If your building is taller than we can serve, we will tell you during the assessment.

Our HOA wants the black streaks off our roofs. Can you help?

Yes. The black streaks are Gloeocapsa magma, a cyanobacteria common on asphalt shingles in coastal humidity. A soft wash applied by drone kills the growth without anyone walking on the roof or pressure washing away the shingle granules. Individual homeowners can book roof cleaning directly, and associations can set up a community-wide plan covering clubhouses, amenity buildings, and other common structures.

Do you work with HOAs, condo associations, and apartment communities on the coast?

Yes. Associations and property managers can set up a single recurring plan covering clubhouses, amenity buildings, apartment buildings, and other common structures, with consolidated scheduling and billing. We will schedule around residents, and individual homeowners can book roof, solar, and skylight cleaning on their own.
